Cable tie saves fingers from paddle gear grease

When we did the Stort Navigation in the summer we came across a simple device I hadn't come across before. You know how sometimes you just can't help getting a bit of grease on your fingers when holding the pawl up while letting a paddle down? Well, someone on the Stort has come up with an ingenious modification: a cable tie attached to the pawl allowing it to be raised "remotely" while you keep clear of the grease. It's fixed so as not to interfere with the operation of the paddle gear.

And there was a lot of grease on the gear at Southmill Lock.

These mods were at many of the locks on the Stort.
