Walking in the October heat

1st October 2011

In the morning of our trip on the Chelmer and Blackwater we joined the local walking group for the monthly hike. We've been doing the Boudicca Way - or the group has, we've missed a few legs - and Saturday's bit was from Tasburgh to Tyrell's Wood in Norfolk. Conveniently this was on the way to Essex.

Length of walk: about six miles. Should be able to polish that off, then drop my Amazon off in Eye and continue to Essex for half-past three.

Except the pace was on the slow side, and why shouldn't it have been? We were the only ones in any sort of hurry.

Everyone looks cheerful here, near the start.

One field we walked through is used for clay pigeon shooting. I hadn't seen the "clay flingers" close up before.

It was very warm. Joe took a rest in the shade of a tree ...

... shortly before we all stopped for coffee anyway.

We saw muntjac - there are five in this photo ...

... and crunched acorns under foot.

At a crossroads, and with at least two miles to go, Jan and I decided to take a more direct route to the end as we were running out of time, and set off at a cracking pace. We shaved off about half a mile and got back to the car about half an hour before the others. Most importantly, we arrived at Paper Mill Lock in good time.

What wonderful weather it was too, Halfie. We too had almost two weeks of spectacular weather here. So good for us all before the winter.
