A Danish camp on the Great Ouse

We delayed leaving Bedford until the rain stopped this morning, getting going at about 1030. The rain didn't return, giving us a fine trip to Great Barford. At Cardington Lock EA staff were installing security cameras in an attempt to counter recent vandalism there. More immediately useful to boaters is the presence of an Elsan point which doesn't appear on every (any?) waterways guide.

It's actually in a car park near the lock. I have sent Paul Balmer the details so he can add it to his Waterway Routes maps. These essential facilities are in short supply upstream of Ely. As far as I can tell this is the only free one; the others are at boatyards which, I assume, charge for their use. And Cardington Lock is something like 21 hours from Ely.

Update:  Simon comments that this Elsan point is intended for use by campervans at Priory Park, not by boaters; Paul has made the same observation.  I was merely passing on a tip from another boater.  You'll have to try to forget that I told you.

At Willington we passed the "Danish Camp", an attractive-looking place with an outside bar and wooden buildings. I cycled past it later, on the dismantled Oxford-Cambridge railway line, and saw that it does cycle hire and food.

In the evening we went for a walk, south along the west bank, crossing the river at the site of Barford Old Mill Lock and returning along the old railway line. Shortly after starting I took this shot of Barford Bridge.

We shall move on to St Neots tomorrow.

(updated to include disclaimer regarding the Elsan point)

St Ives Jones Boatyard did not charge us although we were there to buy diesel. I think they said we could use it anyway and it is accessible (if you know where it is) from the lock. Cambridge is free aand riverside. I think we only paid at popes corner.

The Elsan point is in Priory Country Park for use by campervans. It is not intended for use by boaters so please update to your blog to make that clear.

Thanks Mike, I had assumed that all boatyards would charge; it's encouraging to hear that that isn't necessarily the case. We spoke to a boater who had used the facility at Priory Marina in Bedford without charge.

Simon, I have updated accordingly.
