Is the point of them to protect the paintwork? They certainly don't seem to protect the ropes.

Had them on the share boat, I did not use them, would not fit them on our present boat, because, as you say, they chaff ropes, & have the potential to become missiles. On the front cants on the boat, I have fitted rubbing strakes to protect paintwork, but even they chafe ropes to a certain extent.
We don't have those on NP just the old fashioned rails. I was thinking today while washing all 10 windows on the boat that if I had a continuous piece on the top of the boat then my windows would stay cleaner longer!
I put our centre rope between two of the struts that hold the rail on the boat, that seems to do the trick for us.
I suppose I could unscrew them and fill the holes ...
