Securing two drifting boats on the Paddington Branch

I had thought the duck weed might have been confined to the Slough Arm. But no. It's all over the place down here. This is just south of Cowley Peachey Junction, where we rejoined the main line from the Slough Arm.

We stopped at Bulls Bridge for a quick Tesco shop and an even quicker top-up with water. Kathleen Margaret tied up alongside us and Unique came along too, both boats also going to Waltham Abbey. We had lunch and then started along the Paddington Branch. I had left it too late to book a central London mooring, so we didn't really know where we were going to stop.

Along the way we encountered a hopper full of duckweed.

Later I prepared to move out of the way of another one ...

… until I realised that it was actually the aqueduct over the North Circular Road!

More of a hold-up were two boats which had come adrift, blocking the canal. This was the second one.

In both instances we helped secure the boats, donating a mooring pin to this second one. I almost donated our lump hammer too, until I realised after we had only gone a few yards and went back to retrieve it.

We eventually tied up for the day before Old Oak Lane Bridge 7 at Old Oak Common. We might be beside a bus depot - we'll find out at 0500 - but we are on rings and not right by the concentration of railway lines half a mile further on. After tea on board we walked over the bridge past Willesden Junction station (we were there by train only a couple of weeks ago) and into Harlesden. We kept walking, returning to the boat past Kensal Green Cemetery, joining the towpath at Scrubs Lane Bridge 6.

That's a stretch I know quite well from living in the area. The duckweed is unusual at this time of year, isn't it? Great that you could help the drifting boats!
