By the time I got to work yesterday my fingertips were numb with cold. I'd been wearing two pairs of gloves on the seven mile cycle ride, but still the icy air seeped in. As soon as I entered the car park under The Forum - where the temperature was several degrees above that outside - my fingers began to thaw out. It was very painful for a couple of minutes.
The trees and fields were covered in hoar frost, lit up but unmelted by the sunshine, as they were this morning.
