Walsall Locks

This seems like such a long time ago now! It's about time I caught up with our April cruise on the BCN - our own mini BCN challenge - so here is where I got up to. Walsall Locks, 7th April 2011.

After doing battle with the shirt round the prop after reversing back down the Walsall Town Arm we immediately started up the Walsall flight.

At the top we talked to a couple of students, one of whom told us we were the first boat she'd seen in the locks.

Why is it you were the first the students had seen? Was it that day or is this just not a popular canal? Excuse my ignorance, but not being 'English' any more, I don't know about these things. I love the old red brick buildings along the side of the lock.

It's because it's not a popular canal.

Aah, I wonder why not?

For some reason parts of the Birmingham Canal Navigations have gained a reputation for being "dangerous" areas - quite unjustly in my opinion. Also they can be shallow, weedy and with more rubbish to clog the prop than the more regularly cruised canals. A bit self-perpetuating, really.

Yes, the more it isn't used, the more it's difficult to use. What a shame. Perhaps you can promote its charms more and then more boaters will go there. After all, your blog is pretty popular, I think.
