Heron strikes an unusual pose - drying wings?

As we approached Watford there was a heron on the bank. Nothing unusual about that, they are all over the place. But this one was doing something I'd not seen before.
It looked as if it was sitting on its haunches. Was it drying its wings after a fishing expedition?
