Some sort of steel or iron cover a drain or sluice. Could it be one of those that shoots water up your leg when you wind a ground paddle?

One of the drawbacks of preparing posts for future publication, especially in a mini-competition like this, is that it can be a while before responding to comments, and someone might already have got the answer. That happened here: Karen got it from the first photo. So, Neil, no, it isn't one of those fun spray-it-all-over vents by a ground paddle. It is a drain cover on the Ponty.
