Landscape versus portrait

I get so used to seeing pictures in landscape format that somehow a photo in portrait format seems almost wrong.

Here are two (unedited, uncropped) photos of the same scene: Bridge 62 on the Grand Union Canal at Rowington, one with the camera held at 90ยบ to the other.

What do you think? One better than the other?

For my money its the portrait version which allows the trees to frame the scene.

Have to agree with the Captain on this shot.Others look better in landscape format, some in portrait.

Landscape in this instance as the shape of the bridge is mirrored by the shape of the frame. All just personal choice of course.

I initially preferred the landscape but after several comparisons I believe they both have their own merits.

Andy, Ross, JR and Alan, thank you for your comments. That's 2-1 for portrait, then, with one undecided! Make that two undecided - me as well.
