3GB sim card ordered

Following Nev's post about pre-loaded "3" sim cards I've ordered one from Amazon. I hope i) it arrives before we go on Shadow and ii) I can get it to work with the laptop. The laptop will be expecting the original sim carded dongle, so I don't know how the My Three page will cope.

I won't know unless I try, and if either it doesn't arrive in time, or I can't work out how to connect to the internet with it, I'll just have to buy another £10 top-up.

We haven't yet invested in a Mi-fi thingumajig - is it possible to connect two laptops together with a network cable so the one without a dongle can still connect to the internet?

You might be able to, but we have found our mifi thingy works so well, we wouldn't want to, especially as the mifi thingy we have has an aerial socket so we always get a good signal from outside no matter where we sit on the boat. As to the my3 page, you no longer need it if you buy the preloaded 3gb sims, just install the fresah one and of you go.

Simples.

That's encouraging - thanks Neil.

I have a 3g wireless router on board. Just plug in the dongle and it broadcasts the wireless for up to 5 devices to connect to. just like your router at home? My model is discontinued, maybe pick one up off ebay? Happy browsing

We'll see how we get on with what we have to start with. I expect the time will come when we might look for a mifi device.

I have just used one of the 3 dongles on our latest journey on Centurion, it helps to have a USB extension cable (male/female) you can then hang it up over the curtain rails in front of a window to be sure of a signal.

Andy, yes, we use an extension lead and dangle the dongle exactly as you do/did. In low signal areas I've attached it to a tripod and put it on top of the boat.

That's what we do all the time, both for the laptop dongle and the iPad - it's much cheaper and much easier than topping up.

Good - I'm looking forward to trying it.

You can connect up to 5 devices at the same time using a Mifi, meaning you don't have to connect the laptops together! It becomes just like the router at home... you don't connect to anything physically! We have said you can borrow ours. we no longer use it on the boat.

Ally - oh good! Will you bring it tomorrow? Is it the "3" one? Thanks!

To connect two laptops together with a cable you'd probably need some sort of router or switch between them. I would try connecting them via their WiFi, sharing the internet connection of the one with the dongle. That won't require any additional hardware.

Anonymous, it's a bit academic now as we're using Ally's MiFi device which is working very well.

That's OK. I was catching up with some blogs on my tablet and didn't notice how old the entry was. The tablet also didn't show my identity.
I've enjoyed reading about your latest trip.
Congratulations on your retirement - I'm looking forward to mine in a few years but still enjoying work and not sure how I'd replace it yet.

Stephen, you wouldn't be Steve M would you? If so, greetings to you and family. If not, greetings anyway!

Day ten of retirement, and t still feels like holiday. That's because we are on holiday!
