I replied, saying that all he needs is a mention in Granny Buttons, and his position will rise. The Granny Effect must be worth, what, five places? Ten? It depends on your starting point, of course.
Captain Ahab's blog is well worth dipping into for his explorations of abandoned canals. Here, for example, is part of his account of his discovery of what remains of the Bentley Canal.
A bit further on:
... the very boggy treck along the open strip of grass to reach Monmer was punctuated by an assortment of very angry dogs hurling themselves against the back fences of the adjoining properties. Thankfully, the planking held and we escaped, leaving a chorus of canine howls and snarls behind us...

What is one to say!
You will be interested to know that I took another look and your namesake canal on Sunday and found more than I expected. All will be revealed when I post my findings in 10 days or so.

Andy, I'll be interested to see by how much you leap up the chart now! Looking forward to your write-up of Sunday's excursion.
I will have a look at the sitemeter tonight. It will probably be a record day but not by as huge a margin as one might expect.
