Any entomologists out there?

I found this insect while I was chopping logs this afternoon.

I tried to find out what it was, but it appears that there are a million known species of insect and a further five million species waiting to be discovered. It's probably something common, but my cursory glance at some pictures didn't help.

    At a guess I'd say a beetle, and maybe a longhorn beetle, sorry don't know any more.

    Caroline and Martin, well, it seems you are right about it being a beetle, but not longhorn.

    Jennie, thanks, the image you linked to looks exactly like it. So an ant beetle it is. I'd not heard of it before.

    Vallypee, not so attractive if you are his prey!
