Red bug

While moving logs at home today I came across this little beastie.

A quick search on the internet suggests that this is the red lily beetle.

  1. Yes it is a red lily beetle, they devour fritillaries as well as other things, and are partial to the flowers/flower heads of a plant. They drop to the ground and bury themselves in the soil when they feel in danger.

  2. Not sure if we have any lilies or fritillaries in our garden, but it doesn't sound like a very friendly bug. Don't suppose I'll see it again, though.

  3. their lava get covered in a green gooey mess on the underside of foliage, where there is one there will be more, especially when it is sheltered warm, and sunny.

Sorry - I've had to switch on this word verification thingy. Hope you don't find it too annoying.
