Yes it is a red lily beetle, they devour fritillaries as well as other things, and are partial to the flowers/flower heads of a plant. They drop to the ground and bury themselves in the soil when they feel in danger.
their lava get covered in a green gooey mess on the underside of foliage, where there is one there will be more, especially when it is sheltered warm, and sunny.

ReplyDeleteNot sure if we have any lilies or fritillaries in our garden, but it doesn't sound like a very friendly bug. Don't suppose I'll see it again, though.
